The first of Carnap's systematic works on inductive logic, the other being The Continuum of Inductive Method (1952), in which Carnap distinguished between two concepts of probability: 'statistical probability', which was the relevant concept to be used in empirical contexts and generally estimated from the relative frequencies of events, and 'logical probability', which was to be used in contexts such as the confirmation of scientific hypotheses by empirical data.
