The book is a humorous mystery novel from Cohen's highly popular series featuring Florian Slappey, a dapper, fast-talking, "sometime detective" based out of Birmingham, Alabama. The story follows the chaotic, comedic misadventures of the Midnight Pictures Corporation, an all-Black film studio. In this installment, the film studio is facing a massive industry disruption: trying to successfully make their first "talkie" (sound film) as the silent film era draws to a close. As the studio characters navigate the technical and financial hurdles of recording sound, Florian Slappey gets pulled into his typical antics, attempting to solve local mysteries and outsmart rivals while maintaining his debonair reputation.
