Item description from seller

As Stanley traveled to rescue Emin Pasha from the remnants of the rebels from the Mahdist Revolt, a support detachment was left to the rear for support and retention of further supplies. Life with this rear column was hard rife with low morale, sickness, local conflict and little information or directives from Stanley who subsequently criticised those in the rear. Ward was an artist and naturalist who had spent a decade in Central Africa, it was as he prepared to return to England that Stanley recruited him to become an officer in the rear guard of his planned expedition. Includes 1*map. 164pp. Blue cloth boards with vignette to upper board. Spine cloth sunned. Shelf-wear to extremities. Small indentations to edges of boards. Offset shadow from the bookplate to free endpaper. Formerly owned by the American anthropologist Frederic Starr who travelled extensively through Africa with his bookplate to the front pastedown.
