A first edition copy of Stuart Dodgson Collingwood's work on the life and letters of Lewis Carroll. A family association copy with this volume being presented by Dodgson's sister. This work was written by Lewis Carroll's nephew, Stuart Dodgson Collingwood. The poem is initialed S.D.C and regards a copy of this work, which was presented to LW in France according to the poem, 'across the sea a book I send, to tell you of a living friend'. Loosely inserted is a letter to the Editor of the Times by Beatrice Hatch, one of Charles Dodgson's 'child-friends'. She notes 'May I, as one of his oldest "child-friends" try to give a picture of Mr Dodgson the companionable friend of little girls?' In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, very smart. Spine is faded slightly. Light rubbing to the head and tail of spine. Front hinge is slightly strained but firm. Tipped in to the front are newspaper clippings and a letter from the author to one 'LW'. To the verso of the half-title there is an inscription from Carroll's sister Elizabeth L Dodgson to Reverend W Hooper. Internally, generally firmly bound though strained in places. Pages are bright.
