Item description from seller

A handsomely bound, first edition copy of James David Forbes's biography, written by John Campbell Shairp, Peter Guthrie Tait, and A. Adams-Reilly. A first edition copy of this biography of the life of James David Forbes, written by John Campbell Shairp, Peter Guthrie Tait, and A. Adams-Reilly. James David Forbes was a Scottish physicist and glaciologist who worked extensively on the conduction of heat and seismology. He was a resident of Edinburgh for most of his life, educated at its University and a professor there from 1833 until he became principal of the United College of St Andrews in 1859. This copy is bound in full calf with beautiful gilt designs and lettering along the spine. It contains 6 plates, some of which are photographs, and a folding map to the rear. The previous owner's ink signature can be found on the verso of the front free-endpaper, as well as to the recto of the rear free-endpaper. Handsomely bound in full calf with gilt design and lettering on the spine. Externally, minor shelf wear and rubbing, and spine label has a small tear. Previous owner's signature can be found on verso of front free-endpaper as well as to the recto of the rear free-endpaper. Internally, front hinge is starting but remains firm, otherwise firmly bound. First few front free-endpapers contain scattered spotting and a tidemark, and last few pages contain the odd spot, but otherwise pages are bright and clean. Very Good Indeed. …
