Bound in publisher's original stunning full morocco with bevelled board edges, covers elaborately blocked in gilt, with cover title: The life & explorations of Dr. Livingstone, the great missionary traveller. All page edges gilt. Brown coated endpapers. Colour frontispiece of Livingstone meeting Stanley. Added colour-illustrated title-page with imprint: London & Newcastle on Tyne : Adam & Co. 18 unnumbered leaves of plates (tinted lithographs). The work compiled from reliable sources by John S. Roberts; including extracts from Dr. Livingstone's last journal by E.A. Manning. Mendelssohn dates this work as 1875, based on a letter of Nov. 16, 1874 on p. 622. Condition: Binding tight and secure with the hinges intact. Mild rubbing to extremities. Contents near immaculate and without previous ownership markings. Very good and scarce thus. Adam & Co. 14 Ivy Lane, London and Newcastle on Tyne, On the first title page, facing the frontis both printed in colour, is mentioned Adam & Co. as the publisher. On the printed titled page, the publisher John G. Murdoch is stated. Large thick 4to. viii, 632pp. Full colour title-page and frontis, map plus illustrated with 18 plate tinted lithographs plates with lithographic plates bound in throughout. A very splendid leather embossed binding with gilt decoration, 5 raised bands and all edges gilt. Map lacking. Cover & first 2 leaves in a cluster are loose. Extremeties bumped, rubbed & worn. All 20 plates plus tinted title page present. Block still well bound together from title page to end, frontispiece loose. Interior in nice clean condition apart from minor very occasional age spotting. No names or inscriptions. 2 title pages, 1st is Adam & Co of London and Newcastle-upon-Tyne, 2nd is Haslam of Nottingham, neither dated but believed to be about 1870/80s, soon after his death in 1873.
