About this Item

Description:

A first American edition of 'The Life and Death of Jason; a Poem' by William Morris. William Morris was an English designer, craftsman, poet, and early socialist, whose designs for furniture, fabrics, stained glass, wallpaper, and other decorative arts generated the 'Arts and Crafts' movement in England and revolutionized Victorian taste. Whilst in this current day Morris is best known for his fabric designs, he was best known in his lifetime as a poet, with his literary contributions helped to establish the modern fantasy genre. Morris's epic poem, 'The Life and Death of Jason' was a retelling of the ancient Greek myth of the hero Jason and his quest to find the Golden Fleece. The poem was first published in 1867 by Bell and Dandy at the author's own expense. However, in contrast to Morris's earlier publications 'The Life and Death of Jason' was well received, resulting in the publishers paying Morris a fee for the second edition. This copy is a second edition copy. In a green cloth binding with gilt lettering to the spine. Externally, sound with slight rubbing. Bumping to head and tail of spine. Spine is cocked. Internally, binding loosening in places. Pages 101-124 are working loose. Pages generally bright and clean with some minor age-toning. Ink inscriptions to recto of front free end papers. Good Only.
