In Fiorenza, 1550, al colophon: In Fiorenza, appresso Bernardo Giunti, 1550. In-8° (15,5 cm x 10,5 cm). Cc. 44 (i.e. 45) con numerazione solo al recto, (3). Segnatura: A-F8 (F8 bianca). Solida cartonatura del ‘700 con laccetti passanti, titolo manoscritto sul dorso e collocazione al piede in calligrafia settecentesca. A cura di Lodovico Domenichi, il cui nome figura nella pref. a c. A4(r). Dedicatoria di Lodovico Domenichi “Alla illustre et valorosa Signora, la S. Vittoria Capanna”. La seconda parte del volume contiene a c. D6(r), con numerazione continuativa ma occhietto proprio, “L’ Assiocho”, o vero Dialogo del dispregio della morte di Platone, Tradotto per lo Illustriss. S. Conte d’ Aversa. Il S. Don Gio. Vincentio Belprato”. Marca tipografica al front., poi ripresa alla c. F7(v), con un serpente avviluppato attorno a un giglio con in terra un serpente, ai lati, il motto “Novus Exorior”. Capolettera e fregi in xilografia. Alcune sottolineature ed un paio d’ annotazioni marginali in rafia secentesca Esemplare fresco e genuino, in ottimo stato di conservazione. Prima edizione, rara e ricercata, stampata dai Giunti, come pure “L’ Assiocho”, nel volgarizzamento di Lodovico Domenichi; si tratta anche dell’ ultima opera pubblicata da Bernardo Giunti che morirà nel 1551. Sextus Rufus, o Ruffus o Festus, funzionario e storico latino vissuto attorno alla seconda metà del terzo secolo d.c., fu magister memoriae e proconsole d’ Asia, si rese tristamente noto per la sua crudeltà, sotto l’ imperatore Valente, fratello di Valentiniano I. Nella brevissima prefazione e nell’ epilogo, indirizzati proprio a Valentiniano, egli spiega le ragioni dell’ opera e ci permette anche di situarne l’ epoca di redazione: “ […] Ricevete, quindi, ciò che è stato brevemente riassunto in detti molto concisi, in modo che possa sembrare, o glorioso Principe, che io non tanto racconti, quanto, piuttosto, enumeri anni e durata dello Stato ed eventi della storia […] Dalla fondazione della città alla nascita della Vostra Perpetuità, con cui a Roma è stato assegnato un imperium molto prospero, sono calcolati 1.117 anni.”. L’ opera, scritta in occasione della campagna contro i persiani al 371, è la prima ad analizzare la formazione dell’ Impero intesa come progressiva acquisizione, con l’ aumento della potenza romana, dei territori provinciali nella sfera d’ influenza romana. La seconda parte si svolge sulle guerre contro i Persiani, Parti, Armeni, dai tempi più antichi fino a Gioviano, per terminare con un’ ultima apostrofe al principe che, celebrato come vincitore dei Goti, è certamente Valente. Per l’ Assioco, gli storici della filosofia dubitano, ormai da tempo, che il dialogo possa essere attribuito a Platone, l’ interesse per l’ astronomia e i fenomeni celesti hanno fatto attribuire l’ opera ad un autore vissuto all’ incirca nel I sec. a.C., in età alessandrina, in parte ad Epicuro e a Prodico. In questo enigmatico dialogo, fa parte della letteratura di consolazione, popolare in epoca ellenistica e romana, la tesi centrale è quella della morte intesa come cessazione di tutte le sofferenze che angustiano la vita umana. La morte non è da temere poiché è l’ inizio di una vita migliore; sbaglia chi, come Assioco, crede di trovare conforto nelle cose sensibili e teme di perdere tutto ciò che ama con la morte. Right of withdrawal
If you are a consumer you can withdraw from the contract in accordance with the following. Consumer means any natural person who is acting for purposes which are outside his trade, business, craft or profession.

Statutory right to withdraw
You have the right to withdraw from this contract within 14 days without giving any reason.
The withdrawal period will expire after 14 days from the day on which you acquire, or a third party other than the carrier and indicated by you acquires, physical possession of the last good or the last lot or piece.
To exercise the right of withdrawal, electronically fill in and submit a clear statement on our website, under "My Purchases" in "My Account". We will communicate to you an acknowledgement of receipt of such a withdrawal on a durable medium (e.g. by e-mail) without delay.
To meet the withdrawal deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right of withdrawal before the withdrawal period has expired.
Effects of withdrawal
If you withdraw from this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).
We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.
We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to withdraw from this contract.
We will make the reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.
We may withhold reimbursement until we have received the goods back, or you have supplied evidence of having sent back the goods, whichever is the earliest.
You shall send back the goods or hand them over to Libreria Antiquaria Dentis (ALAI - ILAB), Torino, Torino, Italy, without undue delay and in any event not later than 14 days from the day on which you communicate your withdrawal from this contract to us. The deadline is met if you send back the goods before the period of 14 days has expired. You will have to bear the direct cost of returning the goods. You are only liable for any diminished value of the goods resulting from the handling other than what is necessary to establish the nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods.
Exceptions to the right of withdrawal
The right of withdrawal does not apply to:
- The delivery of newspapers, journals or magazines with the exception of subscription contracts; and
- The supply of digital content which is not supplied on a tangible medium (e.g. on a CD or DVD) if you accepted when you placed your order that we could start to deliver it, and that you could not withdraw once delivery had started.
