First Edition of this curious autobiographical work, detailing Hazlitt's strange infatuation with Sarah Walker, one of his landlord's daughters. Hazlitt, who had moved out of his wife's house, proposed to get a divorce in order to marry Miss Walker but she jilted him. He published this book anonymously to vent his anguish, but all those in his circle were aware of its authorship and it soon became public knowledge. In addition to Hazlitt's own account of his conversations with Miss Walker, the book contains confidential letters addressed to P.G.Patmore and J.S.Knowles regarding the ill-fated love affair. De Quincey called the book an 'explosion of frenzy', necessary to 'empty his overburdened spirit'. Keynes 67. NCBEL III 1232.
