About this Item
First Edition (NAP). From 'Twayne's World Authors Series, A Survey of the World's Literature, Sylvia E. Bowman, Indiana University, General Editor, China, Howard S. Levy, Editor.' Once listed, this will be the Only non-library copy for sale anywhere on the Internet. Moreover, it's in very good shape. You can see the red covers in the photos. They are perfectly clean. The gilt lettering and design on the front and the gilt lettering on the spine are both very bright. The edges and corners look perfect. The spine ends are in very good shape. The book is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. There is a small penned name off the top edge of the first page. There is no other writing to be found anywhere in the book. That first page also has two inconspicuous little tan spots. There's also a tiny to small tan spot just off the top edge of 15 or so consecutive pages around the middle of the book. In no instance does it reach the print. I didn't see any other spots on any of the other pages. I'm not seeing any creasing on any of the pages. There are no markings. And there are no attachments of any kind. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. I don't see any stains. I don't see any tears. There are a number of light creases. There's one at the bottom corner of the rear flap. The flaps are also quite clean. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. I've had it in a fitted protective cover for all the years that I've owned the book. I removed it to better assess the condition of the jacket. After the photos are scanned I'll place a new protective cover on the jacket. From the preface: 'This book fulfills a twofold aim: to study analytically the complete poetical works of Li Ch'ing-Chao in particular and to expose Chinese views on the nature of poetry in general. Li Ch'ing-Chao is the greatest poetess in Chinese literature and a specialist in the art of tz'u, poetry for singing. Her works, though not plentiful, have nevertheless exercised great influence on poets of her time and on those of later generations. The present study briefly presents the times as they relate to the poetess' works, considers the origin and evolution of tz'u translates the poetical works of Li Ch'ing-Chao, and critically discusses them from various angles: semantic, auditory, grammatical, and conceptual.' Li Qingzhao, Li Ch'ing-chao (1084-1155/1156, alternatively 1081-1141, pseudonym Householder of Yi'an was a Chinese poet and essayist during the Song dynasty. She is considered one of the greatest poets in Chinese history. From the front flap: 'The author (Hu Pin-Ching), equally at home in Chinese and English-- and a poet herself-- has translated many of Li Ch'ing-chao's poems in a way that combines elegance with accuracy. Her comments on the poems give insight into the imagery, symbols, allusions, and other features of Chinese poetry in general. This is not only a critical-analytical survey of the poetry of Li Ch'ing-chao, China's great poet of the Sung dynasty, but also an introduction to the poetry for singing called tz'u in which she excelled.'.
