The Screwtape Letters by C. S. Lewis. Published by Geoffrey Bles, London, 1942. First edition, 8vo, pp.160. A complete and presentable first edition of Lewis’s celebrated satirical work. Bound in the original black cloth with the printed paper spine label, lightly rubbed at the extremities with a small bump to the foot of the spine. The spine label is toned but intact and legible. Occasional minor spots to the text, as is usual for wartime production. The letters were originally published weekly as a serial in The Guardian from May to November 1941. Following their critical success, C.S. Lewis made some minor alterations to the text before getting them published in book form. The front pastedown bears the ownership inscription of Rev. Henry John Blount Fry (Easter 1942), with a bookseller’s stamp from Georges, Newcastle-on-Tyne to the flyleaf. The contents remain clean overall, and the binding is sound. Printed to wartime economy standards and reprinted rapidly, the true first edition is now scarce in any condition. This copy offers an honest and complete example of a significant early work by Lewis.…
