First edition. Tall octavo. 325pp. Engraved frontispiece of Lady Lytton. Red cloth gilt. Boards quite scuffed, modest wear on the spine ends, a sound, good or better copy. Two early newspaper clippings tipped-in, one about the lawsuit concerning this book. Purportedly rare, according to Michael Sadlier, "An injunction brought against this book, on copyright grounds, by the family of Lytton prevented more than a few copies getting into circulation." A note on the verso of the front fly dated in 1891 notes the book was "Rigidly Suppressed". The last copy we could find recorded in commerce was in a 1925 Maggs' catalog, although a reasonable number reside in libraries.
