About this Item
pp189 Near Fine in fresh grey cloth with gilt spine lettering, the only blemish being very lightly spotted edges; the pages are crisp and bright, no inscriptions. In a near fine dust wrapper, not price clipped, the flaps are neatly taped together around the book. The front cover illustration is of the paddle steamer 'Asia' on which John Stubbins Webb crossed the Atlantic to New York in 1853. The letters sent back to his family in Sheffield contain accounts of his travels in the eastern states of America and Canada, where he took an interest in current affairs such as the Crimean War, the anti-slavery movement and women's rights. Laid in: A letter from Barry Davies, the author's great-grandson, explaining how the letters came to be in his possession. A fascinating volume.
