8vo. Scarce Limited Edition from the influential 19th-century Harvard Law Professor and brother of Supreme Court Justice Horace Gray The Letters present an immediate picture of certain phases of the Civil War and remain an important record of the true historical spirit of an individual participant. Engraved portrait frontispiece, index, other portraits. "The unique correspondence of two prominent Bostonians who wrote of the war with deep insight; Gray was a Union officer, and Ropes gained eminence as an historian." A very good copy bound in maroon cloth centrally stamped in blind, spine lettering in gilt. One bumped corner, spine ends rubbed with slight scar on spine, and light fraying to cloth at spine ends. Presents handsomely in a clear, archival mylar dust jacket. A tough-to-come-by record from the eyewitnesses who experienced it.
