A first edition of Sydney Smith's letters discussing changes in the distribution of Church revenue. A first edition of three letters Sydney Smith sent to Archdeacon Thomas Singleton regarding the Ecclesiastical Commission. Following the Reform Act of 1832, which mandated the reform of public institutions, the body of ecclesiastical commissioners were appointed to determine the distribution of the revenues of the Church of England, and made extensive changes to to the way revenue was administered. Prior owner's ink inscription to the front wrap, 'Haiward Skine. June 20th 1884' Prior owner's pencil inscription to the front wrap, 'D. V. Arnold' In a blue paper binding. Externally, sound. The volume is lacking the rear paper wrap, and some of the wrap has chipped to the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with the odd cluster of foxed pages and a little pencil marginalia. Good.
