About this Item
4°. 4 pages. Light waterstains, edges frayed, inner hinge repaired (not affecting Toussaint's letter). *** The entire number 224 of Le Redacteur, 8 Thermidor An 4/ 26. Juillet 1796. *** Printed here (probably for the first time, see below) is Toussaint's letter to the Directoire relating the events around Vilatte's 'Attentat du 30 Nivoise' at the Cap. This was one of the major turning points in Toussaint Louverture's career; having helped governor de Laveau to quell the coup, he was made adjoint to the governor, greatly enhancing his power and standing. On March 20, 1796, he wrote a letter to the French government relating the events. The letter reached Paris through the French minister in the U.S. and was published in the Moniteur of 10 Thermidor. *** This publication predates the Moniteur printing (the one usually cited by historians) by two days. I was not able to trace any earlier printing. Seller Inventory # ABE-1720769176837
