Item description from seller

Account of Ross' second Arctic expedition aboard a side-wheel steamship the 'Victory' on which he was accompanied by his nephew Sir James Clark Ross who became the first European to locate the magnetic north pole on this mission. Though the expedition failed Ross was introduced to William IV and was knighted and his crew were well rewarded for their search and subsequent escape from the ice. This work was considered an unauthorized history of the expedition and was published as a cheaper edition to Ross' own account. 716pp. Half-bound in contemporary black calf with green cloth to remainder. Heavy rubbing to edges of leather. Endpapers renewed. Believed originally published in 1835, an engraved title pate dated 1834 was subsequently added prior to publishing. Foxing throughout of varying intensity. Inserted engraved title plate splitting from text-block but still attached. Split between pages 714 and 715 leaving text-block separated from boards. Contains no plates. Sabin 33626.
