1941. First US edition. vii, 228pp., colour frontispiece and black and white drawings. Elmer Inglesby Ransom (1892-1942) was an American teacher, author and sportsman. This book is a collection of ten short stories. Although one of his friends said that he ranked among the best with the shotgun and rifle, his interest in wild life was far from merely predatory. The “characters” of this collection of tales are for the most part wild creatures - the trumpeter swans which give the book its title, the strong and wise raccoon, the sailfish in battles with other deep sea swimmers, the cougar, the deer, the fox, even the king snake. There are also human beings in these stories, and sometimes they play important parts. The book is bound in the original black cloth covered boards with silver titling on the spine and a silver illustration of a swan on the front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with some shelf wear to the boards and light bumping to the spine ends and top corners. The contents are tight and clean with no inscription.…
