Hubert Selby Jr. built a raw, polyphonic portrait of dockworkers, street gangs, drag queens, prostitutes and factory laborers enduring the realities of the industrial blocks of Sunset Park around the Brooklyn Army Terminal during the 1950s. Rather than adhering to conventional narrative distance, the text uses a propulsive, jazz-inflected syntax punctuated by typewriter forward slashes and phonetic street dialect to place the reader inside the psychology of characters surviving on the margins. Grove Press published the work in New York in 1964. Its six interconnected sections had circulated in part through avant-garde periodicals including Black Mountain Review, New Directions No. 17, Provincetown Review, Kulchur and Swank before publisher Barney Rosset acquired the manuscript. Graphic designer Roy Kuhlman created the jacket typography. Selby developed these linked novellas over several years following a prolonged recovery from tuberculosis contracted in the merchant marine, drawing encouragement from the writer Gilbert Sorrentino to translate his observations of dockside Brooklyn into fiction. Publication in 1964 placed the book at the center of the era's debates over free speech, culminating in a 1966 to 1968 trial in the United Kingdom that reshaped censorship law under the Obscene Publications Act. Hubert Selby Jr. (1928-2004) is a central figure in twentieth-century American transgressive and realist fiction, and the work is read today across post-war American literature, urban realism and censorship history.…

Shipping terms
DOMESTIC SHIPPING:
We offer a choice of media mail (when applicable), first class, priority and/or expedited whenever possible. Choices for shipping methods vary and will appear at checkout (as well as additional opportunities to purchase insurance, extra insurance, etc.). All domestic orders include tracking.
INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING:
International shipping has become increasingly complex, but we do our best to keep up. If you have any questions regarding shipping to your country, feel free to reach out before you order. We will do our best to give you an exact quote.
All international orders include tracking and insurance. Expedited orders generally ship via USPS, DHL or Priority Mail International depending on the destination. Consolidated shipping is usually via Asendia or a similar, reliable carrier.
**VAT, Fees & Taxes: **
Where your country requires, and when under the value threshold set by your country, VAT is collected at checkout and remitted by the marketplace you ordered through. Any additional fees, duties, or taxes your country or carrier charges upon arrival are the buyer's responsibility (collected by your postal service or carrier when the package is delivered). The one exception is the European Union (see below).
The European Union:
As of 2026, the EU has added a new customs duty on every parcel entering the Union. Because of this, we are now required to prepay all duty and customs (DDP) before shipping, which is why you may notice that our EU rates run significantly higher than other countries. Additionally, on orders over 150 Euros, the full VAT tax due, over and above €150, is most often not collected by marketplaces at checkout. We may contact you through the marketplace you ordered to collect these additional VAT fees before shipping.
Typical speeds:
Although customs and overseas carrier delays sometimes happen and are outside of our control, the following should be a good guide (Business days only). If you need it faster, feel free to reach out. Sometimes we can achieve the “almost” impossible :)
