Item description from seller

The Land of Amber and Shale (originally published in Russian is a Soviet economic geography and travelogue written by Soviet geographer Mikhail Ivanovich Rostovtsev and translated for international distribution by Moscow's Progress Publishers in 1970. The book presents a survey of the northwestern Baltic territories of the USSR, focusing heavily on the Estonian SSR and Latvian SSR, with broader context on Lithuania and the Kaliningrad Region. It blends travelogue narrative with regional studies, detailing historical and industrial sites including Tallinn (Toompea, Old Town, Kopli), Narva, Tartu, Saaremaa Island, Matsalu, and the Gauja River valley. Original off-white cloth boards stamped with black and mustard-yellow mid-century geometric artwork on the front panel and spine. Housed in its original color jacket featuring multi-panel folkloric and industrial illustrations. Translated from the Russian by R. Bobrova, edited by V. Talmi, and designed by G. Dauman. Published in Moscow, USSR, by Progress Publishers. Features striking blue geometric endpapers and dramatic full-page linocut/woodcut illustrations. The text block remains clean and tightly bound, presenting an illustrated travel and regional study focused on the Baltic Soviet republics of Estonia and Latvia.
