FIRST EDITION. 8vo, incl. b/w plates. Original red cloth, spine lettered in silver, black-stamped design of a snake manilla to upper board. Top edge black. Bottom edges bumped, a trifle rubbed, else, clean and tight. In the striking illustrated dust jacket, featuring the Manchester cotton 'Mammy Cloth' design: price-clipped, toned, edgewear, nick to centre of spine. Near fine/ very good A lovely copy of Ellen Thorp's sharply-titled account "of a century's work by Britain in teaching Nigeria 'how to live'" (1853-1953), in the striking original dust jacket, with a design based on Manchester cotton 'Mammy Cloth,' produced for export to West Africa.
