MacManus, Seumas. A Lad of the O'Friels. New York: McClure, Phillips & Co., 1903. First US edition. Octavo, pp. [i-viii] ix-x [xi-xii] 1-296 [297-306: publisher ads] [307-308: blank]. Original pictorial light brown cloth, front panel stamped in green, red and black. spine panel stamped in black, fore- and bottom edges untrimmed. Front free endpaper and one preliminary leaf (half-title?) neatly excised, one early page-pair roughly opened, faint water stains to spine, otherwise an excellent copy, the pictorial front panel presenting very nicely. #1339. $35. Brown 1065. The author was born in Ireland, moved to America, then traveled back and forth as he became a very popular retailer of light-hearted "comical" Irish tales. Now he seems to have followed from grace. Brown acknowledges elsewhere that "at times the fun goes perilously near 'Stage-Irishism'" Some of his writing touches on Irish legends.
