About this Item
Copyright 1908. Publication date on title page is 1908, but two letters on the obverse are dated 1909; but from all I can learn, this is a true First Edition. 12mo. 153[1]p. Illustrated with 103 black and white captioned (for the most part) photos, including many "mug shots" of important people, e.g., early Oklahoma politiciamns, and numerous black and white line drawings as tail pieces. Numerous illustrated pictorial period ads Tan wrappers printed in green with vignettes in green on the front cover of "Oleta", a tee pee, the Great Resort (two views) and a vignette in green on the rear cover of "How to Get to Sulphur Springs via the Frisco." Wrappers lightly soiled, small tear to front wrapper with no loss, a couple of tiny chips missing around the edges, chips missing at top and bottom of spine, fingernail sized chip missing from leading edge of p. 27, fingernail sized chip folded over at p. 153 (actually a trimming flaw), all photos in fine condition, else very good to near fine with no internal markings. Purporting to be an autobiographical novel written by a Chickasaw woman, it was, according to Marable and Boylan's "A handbook of Oklahoma Writers" [Norman: University of Oklahoma Press, 1939], actually authored by Aaron Abbot, the Publisher. Its intent is signaled by the title: to generate interest in Sulphur Springs Resort, the mineral springs resort that had begun to develop near Sulphur, OK, in the 1890s, partly on Indian land. In 1902 this land became part of the Sulphur Springs Indian Reservation (a photograph of which appears in this book, along with one of ?pretty maidens of the Sulphur Indian School?), later renamed the Platt National Park, and is now known as the Chickasaw National Recreation Area.
