1st US edition. Fine in dust jacket. The author's first novel, winner of the 2000 ARTHUR ELLIS AWARD for Best First Novel. Nominated for the JOHN CREASEY Award and the SHAMUS Award. Criminal defence lawyer Bartholomew Crane arrives in a small lakeside town in Northern Ontario to defend a schoolteacher accused to murdering two teenaged girls. No bodies have been found and there is little evidence of the teacher's guilt, yet there's a nagging concern that all is not right. The deeper he digs into the teachers- and the town's - past, the more disturbed and stressed he becomes. Peculiar visions haunt his imagination; telephones ring ceaselessly in the night; and sometimes, out of the corner of his eye, he can see two young girls following him wherever he goes. is his mind playing tricks on him? Or has he been dragged into the town's spiralling collective hysteria..
