First edition (stated). Dark maroon cloth with blind-stamped SPQR eagle emblem to the front cover, bright gold spine lettering and decoration designed by W.A. Dwiggins; in the illustrated dust jacket. Faint rubber-stamped "Property of U.S. Navy" to the top edge of the text block, else a fine copy; in a near fine dust jacket with minor edge wear, and two closed tears to the rear panel. Front flap price of $3.95. Ralph Graves (1924-2013) was an reporter, editor, and author of several novels. This is an historical novel that captures the spirit of one of the great ages in which a fictional Roman, Severus Varus, searches for the legionary emblems lost by a kinsman at the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest.
