London Past and Present (The Studio, 1916) is a handsome wartime publication that captures the architectural, historical and artistic character of London at a moment when much of the city's ancient fabric still survived. Issued by The Studio, the celebrated London-based magazine renowned for its high standards of art publishing, the volume belongs to a distinguished tradition of illustrated topographical books that combined scholarship with visual appeal. The book presents a portrait of London through a comparison of its historic inheritance and its modern appearance in the early twentieth century. Rather than serving merely as a guidebook, it acts as a celebration of the capital's evolution over centuriesRef CCC 4.…
