First edition (per publisher's "First printed in 1924" statement upon copyright page; American edition with Lauriat imprint but British sheets). xvi, 422 pages. Hardcover: H 22.25cm x L 15cm. No dust jacket (i.e. lacking). Blue cloth; vibrant gilt stamped lettering to spine. Gilt top edge; a few small stains to fore-edge; some soiling to bottom edge. Candle, book, and owl-themed personal bookplate of St. Louis physician, naval historian, and author E. Lee Dorsett (Edward Lee Dorsett, 1883-1967) at front pastedown center; slender bookseller ticket "Chas. E. Lauriat Co., | Importers & Booksellers | 385 Wash'n St. Boston" affixed at front free endpaper's bottom left corner; past owner affixed various related clippings to ffep recto/verso, half-title verso (i.e. page ii), to frontis recto, pages iv and v, and on four rear leaves. Laid-in at front endpapers is July 1955 typed letter signed from The Scottish Committee of the Cutty Sark Preservation Society to Dr. Dorsett. A few leaves towards book's rear have shallow creases at their top fore-edge corners; interior pages are otherwise clean. Binding is firm. Still a handsome book.…
