Small octavo (13.5x9.5 cm), pp. [1-4] 5-52 [53] [54-56: blank], title page printed in red and black, original gray cloth-backed marbled boards, spine panel lettered in gold, t.e.g., other edges untrimmed. First separate British edition? A short story first published in TEMPLE BAR, 51 (October 1877) and first collected in NEW ARABIAN NIGHTS (1882). The first separate edition was published in January 1900, in Wausau, Wisconsin, by The Philosopher's Press. There were many separate editions of this story about François Villon, a legendary fifteenth century thief and poet. The 1902 Roycrofters edition is very common, The Philosopher's Press edition and this one are not. The text block is cracked between signature A and B, but the copy is still sound.
