Maslen and Lancaster. Bowyer ledgers 3044; ESTC T149591; Maslen and Lancaster. Bowyer ledgers 3174; ESTC T149592;ODNB Roger North (1651–1734), lawyer, politician, and writer. ‘. North's son Montagu published the three lives after his father's death, that of Francis in 1742 and those of John and Dudley in 1744. While he heavily edited his father's manuscripts of the two latter, the version which Montagu produced for publication of Francis's Life, the longest of the three, grossly distorts both the form and content of his father's final version. North's theory of biography, discussed in his 'general preface' (published in 1984 as Roger North: General Preface and Life of Dr John North, edited by Peter Millard), is among the earliest in English, and his longest biography—that of Francis North—demonstrates not only his theoretical concerns but, in its innovative form, his ideas of combining chronological and thematic structure .’ US$371.
