Large 8vo. xix, (1), 308 pp. 17 plates including the frontispiece (with tissue-guard, browned) Publisher's original red buckram, gilt, spine slightly faded and edges rubbed, head and tail of the spine worn. Ex.libris Robert Elson (Whittington, Salop), Walter Blake ("Virtus Sola Nobilitat") and J & U Brass, with bookplates. An about VG copy. Joseph Severn (1793-1879) was an English painter and a Close friend of John Keats. He exhibited portraits, Italian genre, literary and biblical subjects, and a number of his paintings can be seen in major collection including the National Portrait Gallery, the Victoria and Albert Museum and Tate Britain. He travelled to Italy with Keats in 1820-21 spending some months living in an apartment at number 26 Piazza di Spagna, in Rome, at the bottom of the Spanish Steps overlooking Bernini's famous Barcaccia fountain.
