First printing of this bestselling and classic insider account of 1980s "greed is good" Wall Street. One of the defining business and finance books of the Me Decade, LIAR'S POKER details Lewis's time at Salomon Brothers and its crude, fratboy culture. Much like BREAKING BAD and THE SOPRANOS, however, the book (intended as a cautionary tale) has become for better or worse a widely admired cult text among finance insiders. (Your humble cataloguer cannot remember if this joke is in Lewis's account of Salomon's development of the mortgage bond, but I can't look at the book without thinking of it: "What's the difference between a bond and a bond trader? The bond matures."). 9'' x 6''. Original navy half-cloth over beige boards. In original unclipped ($18.85) color pictorial jacket designed by Andrew M. Newman. 250, [6] pages. Crease to front flap. Minor rubbing, toning; a few patches of faint soil to verso (only). Book has slight lean, bit of pushing at spine tips. Previous owner name to front pastedown. Overall, sound. Very good plus in a very good plus jacket.…

Review
Lewis has a gift for the rapid portrait. Unless you find his flippant one-liners irritating, it is a pleasure to be guided around the jungle of bond markets by his reminiscences and trenchant asides. . . . Apart from the belly-laughs, one of the triumphs of "Liar's Poker" is that it makes the financial complexities of investment banking and the markets accessible to the layman. . . . Everything from yields to selling short is painlessly clarified in the course of the narrative. --Victor Mallet"
Vivid and memorable. "
Lewis takes the reader through his schoolboy's progress as trainee and geek in the trading room, to high-powered swashbuckler. The author has a puckish appreciation for the comic. Yet he also has the knack of explaining precisely how complex deals really work. He provides the most readable explanation I've seen anywhere of the origin within Salomon Brothers of the mortgage-backed securities market....It is good history, and a good story.
