About this Item
First UK Edition. Publisher's brown boards with yellow lettering to the front board and spine. Yellow end-papers. Boards really bright and clean. Overall a near fine (or better) copy. In the RARE dustwrapper which is priced 7/6 net to the inside flap (as called for). The VG+ dustwrapper is darkened to the spine with a touch of rubbing at the base of the spine and with shallow chipping at the head (not affecting any lettering). First book. A jealous, cruel husband (a young English newspaperman) deludes himself into believing that his wife has deceived him and who arranges that the wife's suspected lover shall die for the murder of the wife. The husband plots the murder as carefully as one of his own novels, is free of suspicion, and, as the lover is executed, learns his suspicious are unfounded. A well sustained study of a warped mind and interesting as a first novel. From the blurb to the front flap: "This is a murder story with the grim, macabre quality of Edgar Allan Poe.we have never come across such a convincing and unforgettable study of the mind of a murderer. For a first novel it is a considerable achievement. As a psychological study we believe this novel will rank with Malice Aforethought". High praise indeed. The Times praised this novel as being: "a first novel of almost shocking brilliance". NB: The Faber first edition is the "true" first edition of this title. Great period dustwrapper artwork by Roberts Johnson. Photographs/scans available upon request. Seller Inventory # 355490721767
