Add to basketA well-preserved copy of a collection of 26 essays and chapters from Roberts' books. According to Jack Bales (1993), this book resulted from Roberts' disappointment with the collection published ten years prior as For Authors Only, which he thought sold poorly because of the title. Bales notes Roberts "wanted Doubleday to bring out a new edition under a different title," but the publisher deemed that unethical (p. 141n27). As a result, this Reader picks up 13 of the 19 essays in For Authors Only (five of which are renamed, as noted in the headings) and adds 13 more, largely chapters from his novels. Note: I have a large selection of Kenneth Roberts books and related materials. Contact me if you are looking for something in particular. Size: 8"-9" - Octavo (8vo). 460 pages. Item Type: Book. Text block is tight and unmarked, though the pages have toned with age. Hardcover bound in blue-gray cloth over boards. Title in dulled gilt on the spine. Front top corner sharp; front bottom corner bumped; rear corvers slightly turned in, all worn at the tips. Head and foot of spine are worn. No foxing in this copy. Unclipped ($3.00) dust jacket has large chips at the head of the spine at the folds, not affecting any text, and shallow chips at the foot of the spine. Wear at the head and foot of the flap folds with some small closed tears. The price and a code is written in pencil at the top of the rear fold, with a blurb on Roberts. The jacket has been protected in a sleeve for some time and now is in a clear archival Brodart sleeve. The top page edges are stained in a blue-gray to match the color of the clother. The other page edges are slightly browned. Quantity Available: 1. Category: Essays & Literary Criticism; United States; 1940s; Fiction.
