Even today universities adhere to a time-honored hierarchy of professors, readers, lecturers, demonstrators, techniciansa structure first established in the European anatomical theaters of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. These were the players in the theater of anatomythough inevitably the cadaver took center stage.
