A very rare and attractive early California view depicting gold mines in Placer County, produced by the lithographers Kuchel & Dresel in concert with iconic San Francisco printers Britton & Rey. Charles C. Kuchel and Emil Dresel were both German immigrants. After starting in Philadelphia in the late twenties, by 1853 they had partnered up in California where they printed at least fifty views of the gold regions in the short years between 1855 and 1859. Many of the views in this series were printed both with and without a number of smaller vignettes surrounding the central view; this is the version of the Forrest Hill print with a larger central image and no vignettes. Outside of their California view series, they are known for producing lithographs for Edward Vischer's series on the Mammoth Tree Grove. "The outstanding work of this firm was a series entitled 'Kuchel & Dresel's California Views,' including all the important cities and mining towns, with a few of Oregon and Washington, issued during 1855, 1856, 1857, and 1858. They were sometimes published by a local merchant, often the bookseller.Unless otherwise noted, all we have listed were drawn and lithographed by Kuchel & Dresel and printed by Britton & Rey" Peters. This view of Forrest Hill shows the mining camp, made up of less than two dozen modest buildings, dotting the low, sparsely-wooded foothills of the Sierra Nevada. A few flumes are visible stretching down toward a fork of the American River, and a number of logs lie about the hillsides, indicating ongoing construction. "At Coloma and at Auburn great numbers spent the rainy season of 1849-50. To them came word by underground telegraph that the ridge between the middle fork of the American river and Shirt Tail Gulch held a vast treasure. The stampede was on.Forest [sic] Hill diggings were the result.Eighteen fifty-three saw Forest Hill at the height of its activity. The violent storms of the previous winter had brought down great masses of loose gravel at the head of Jenny Lind Canyon, exposing much gold-bearing material from the ancient Blue Lead channel, a preglacial river bed. In the renewed excitement which followed claims as small as 50 feet were located along the side hill into which tunnels were driven, varying in length from a bare 200 feet to upwards of a mile.In its hey-day Forest Hill possessed a newspaper, several substantial hotels, banks, stores and a great number of 'elegant saloons.' Even as late as 1880 the community ranked among the larger of the Placer County towns, the census of that year giving a population of nearly 700" Watson. OCLC locates this rare print at only three institutions: Yale (in an album with thirty Kuchel & Dresel views), the University of California at Berkeley (two copies, both with vignettes), and the Huntington Library (with vignettes).
