The subject is Klaus Barbie ~ alias Klaus Altmann ~ whom I was able to recognize in your news broadcast. I was a member of the U.S. Counter Intelligence Corps (CIC) in 1948, staioned in Augsburg, Germany, where I first met Klaus Barbie and worked with him for nearly a year as the head of an information network that he had organized and offered to the American Intelligence community for a price. Upon orders from our own American Intelligence Service in Frankfurt, I was asked to bring Klaus Barbie and Kurt Merk from the town of Memminger to Augsburg, where my CIC unit was stationed. After providing proper housing for these two men and some of their friends, I met with both of them at least three times a week to edit information which they provided and I then forwarded this report to our higher headquarters. For this service I was authorized to pay $1,700.00 per month in American dollars, which the two men ostensibly divided among their informants in the field. On two separate occasions, French Intelligence agents requested to talk to me in regard to the whereabouts of Klaus Barbie. Upon instructions from my own higher headquarters, I was told to deny to the French agents that I knew where Klaus Barbie was; in fact, I convinced them, "I've never even heard of the man." Personally, I was very upset that I could not turn him over to the French at the time. I later learned from Kurt Merk that he actually deserved the title of "Butcher of Lyons," having killed over 200 French throughout the period of their association in France. If Klaus Barbie is ever brought to trial in France or West Germany, I would be willing to testify, since I recall many more crimes committed by Barbie in France during the occupation. I hope this information will be given to the proper people, to bring this war criminal to his deserved end. Sincerely, Erhard Dabringhaus. " So begins the first eyewitness account of the US and CIC control officer Dabringhaus' involvement with the odious "Butcher of Lyons. "Read this moving story of fear, intrigue, manipulation and horror by an American who personally witnessed it all. Seller Inventory # 3052105
