First Edition, First Impression, First Issue | 1903 | Hugh Wansey Bayly Armorial Bookplate First edition, first impression, first issue, identified by the uncorrected reading “David” on page 56, line 9, rather than the subsequently corrected “Saul”, together with the publisher's catalogue dated July 1903 bound at the rear. An attractive example of Kipling's important collection of Edwardian poetry, retaining its original publisher's cloth binding and distinguished by the engraved armorial bookplate of Hugh Wansey Bayly. Published in 1903, The Five Nations reflects Kipling's engagement with the political, military and imperial concerns of the early twentieth century. Written in the aftermath of the South African War, the collection explores themes of national identity, duty, sacrifice, military service and Britain's relationship with its overseas dominions. Among its notable poems is The Islanders, a pointed examination of British military preparedness and national complacency. The collection remains an important literary record of Edwardian imperial attitudes and Kipling's evolving political and social commentary. Bibliographical Details: Author: Rudyard Kipling (1865–1936) Title: The Five Nations Publisher: Methuen and Co., London Publication Date: 1903 Edition: First edition, first impression, first issue, supported by the recorded textual and publisher's catalogue points. Printer: T. and A. Constable, Edinburgh, Printers to His Majesty. Pagination: 215 pages, followed by the publisher's catalogue dated July 1903. Binding: Original publisher's reddish-brown cloth. Format: Hardback. Dust Jacket: None. First-Edition Identification: This copy exhibits two important bibliographical points associated with the first issue of the 1903 Methuen edition: 1. Uncorrected textual reading: Page 56, line 9, retains the word “David”, subsequently corrected to “Saul” in later printings. 2. Publisher's catalogue: The volume retains Methuen and Company's publisher's catalogue dated July 1903, bound following the main text. Provenance and Association: An especially appealing feature of this copy is the engraved armorial bookplate of Hugh Wansey Bayly, preserved on the front pastedown. The bookplate displays a quartered heraldic shield, crest and motto, with the owner's name rendered in Gothic lettering. This establishes identifiable former ownership and associates the volume with a named private library. The survival of the original bookplate adds historical and bibliographical interest, particularly for collectors of provenance copies, Edwardian literature and books from historic private collections. No direct personal association between Hugh Wansey Bayly and Rudyard Kipling has been established. Condition: Good (G) Collectors' Note: An appealing first-issue example of Kipling's The Five Nations, distinguished by the uncorrected “David” reading, the July 1903 publisher's catalogue and the engraved armorial bookplate of Hugh Wansey Bayly. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form part of the condition description. Shipping: International shipping costs are estimated. Additional charges may apply due to size or weight. We will confirm any extra postage costs with the buyer before processing the order.…

Store description
Step into the world of Cranston & Perry, where every shelf holds a little history and every book has a story beyond the one printed on its pages. We seek out books with character, from time-worn editions with foxed pages, beautiful bindings and forgotten inscriptions, to collectable children’s books, literary classics, unusual finds and modern voices worth rediscovering. Some are rare. Some are wonderfully ordinary. Some have travelled through generations before reaching us. What matters is that each deserves to find the right reader and a new place on the shelf. Part antiquarian bookseller, part treasure hunter and entirely devoted to books, Cranston & Perry celebrates literature in all its forms: beautiful, rebellious, curious, scholarly, nostalgic and occasionally rather strange. Every book has a past. Every reader begins another chapter. We simply bring the two together.…
