Proudhon was indicted, convicted and sentenced to three years, one month and fifteen days in jail and assessed a 4,000 franc fine. He fled to Brussels to avoid incarceration and remained there for most of what was left of his life. De la Justice is Proudhon's most massive and most powerful work. The book is written in letter-form, addressed to Proudhon's former fellow-townsman, the cardinal of Besan�on, Mahieu, who was considered to be one of the most eloquent defenders of the Catholic faith. Here was a perfect foil since Proudhon was claiming that the church was the disruptive element that stood squarely between the people and justice. But the church is just the worldly representative of the true secret enemy of mankind, God who is the sources of power in this world. In attacking God and the church, he argued vehemently for his own theory of "immanent justice" as opposed to the prevalent Christian concept of "transcendental justice." This was the heart and soul of his "philosophy of revolution" which is clearly and elaborately explained throughout these three volumes. contemporary cloth backed speckled boards.
