Set approximately twenty-five to thirty years after a catastrophic nuclear conflict known as the One-Day War and the subsequent plagues that drastically reduced the human population, the story unfolds in a depopulated, rural America where survivors face infertility, deformed births, and the challenge of rebuilding society. The narrative centers on Eve, a twenty-eight-year-old woman who has lived in near-total isolation on a farm in what was once upstate New York with her increasingly blind mother and a mentally and physically limited companion named Caleb. When three very different men—Claudius, an older, widely traveled loner with a crippled arm; Ethan, a powerful, younger hunter; and Kenneth, a bookish, introspective thirty-year-old—arrive at the farm, Eve sends each on a separate months-long journey, instructing them to return with their personal answer to the question “What is love?” By the author of Davy, the first book in Pangborn's Darkening World series. Mass market paperback; no stated publishing history so presumed first edition, first printing thus. Publisher book number 4292, cover price $0.45. This is a used book. Pages are clean and bright with no markings, notes, or highlighting. Covers show only minor shelf wear and several vertical stress creases near the spine. No owner's marks or bookplates, not ex-library. Binding is tight and square. Hinges are secure. Price sticker on front cover. Corners not bumped. …
