First printing of this edition, edited by Harold Williams and compiled from the editions of 1766 (Hawkesworth) and 1768 (Deane Swift). Two octavo volumes. Blue cloth hardcovers; dustjackets; lxii,368; vi,369-801pp; frontispiece to each volume plus 10 unnumbered leaves of plates (facsimiles). A very clean set, fresh and unmarked, in the original dustwrappers which are unclipped, mildly dusted and a shade toned on spine panels; Very Good or better overall. First critical edition collecting all 65 of the letters written by Swift to Esther Johnson and Rebecca Dingley between 1710 and 1713. Includes a substantial (62-pp) scholarly introduction by the editor and photographic facsimiles of those letters which were still extant at the time of publication.
