In about the 1830's Colonel Scott served in the 18th Spanish Infantry and fought in the Carlist Wars ( which were fought to establish the succession to the Spanish throne and the nature of the monarchy). After Isabella II became Queen , Scott, as a result of injuries and not wishing to serve under her reign, retired from service and determined instead to join the Emir Abd-el-Kader in Algeria. a religious and military leader who led a struggle against the French colonial invasion of Algiers in the early 19th century . Scott was appointed of chief of the Emir's staff and thus able to witness the development of the Emir's campaign first hand. Scott declares in the Introduction that "My sole object in laying this Journal before the public , is to vindicate the character of His Royal Highness the Emir, and to clear it from the aspersions thrown on it by the French paper ; and that he may be viewed in his real and true character . whose liberal policy and government, were he only on the throne of Algiers, would render that country, in a short time, the most enlightened under the Moslem sway". An uncommon first edition of this work, now refurbished in a full leather binding.
