FIRST UK EDITION. TRUE FIRST EDITION. Title page & dedication page both dated 1863 with no further printing dates. Includes the large FOLDING MAP at rear, as issued. The foldout map is bound in (no pocket). Illustrated with all 26 full-page plates (including both steel-engraved frontispiece portrait of Speke, plus steel-engraved portrait of Grant, each with facsimile signature below), 2 maps (1 large folding partly-coloured, 1 full-page coloured), plus 49 b&w illustrations in the text. All illustrations complete, as issued (one illustration mis-numbered in contents as "609" instead of correctly 608). The illustrations are chiefly from drawings by Captain Grant. With appendices at rear. No advertisements. The first UK edition was published in 1863, followed by the second UK edition which appeared in 1864. The first US edition also appeared in 1864, a year after the first UK edition. The first UK edition (the first appearance) was 16 December 1863 & the first impression of 4000 copies was increased to 7500 to cater for the Christmas market. A landmark work, a classic of African exploration. Thick heavy volume. Printed in Edinburgh in 1863 by William Blackwood & Sons. Bound in contemporary half leather, marbled boards, raised bands, gilt lettering & elaborate gilt design within compartments to spine, marbled endpapers, marbled edges. Loss to upper portion of spine (approx. 3 x 4cm) (with spine lettering partly chipped off), slight handling wear, map with 2 large closed tears at inner margin only (approx. 4cm + 9cm), one plate a little loose, otherwise overall a VERY GOOD nice clean tight solid copy, complete with all plates & the foldout map. xxxi + 658pp + map.
