Item description from seller

Offering: Kenneth Patchen. The Journal of Albion Moonlight. NYC: The United Book Guild, 1944. First thus. Good in like DJ. The boards and textblock are sound, with modest toning and a clean title page. Hint of damp stain to bottom edge of book form. Back inner cover shows unusual darkened fingerprint-like impressions, likely from handling or material transfer—ghostly in character, with some tonal variation but no structural damage to the paper. The jacket, with its black-and-red typographic design, remains striking, with shelfwear and a faint vertical pressure crease. Make no mistake.this book has character. First published in 1941 and here issued in its 1944 United Book Guild edition, The Journal of Albion Moonlight is Kenneth Patchen’s wildest work — a surreal, fragmented novel that rages against war, fascism, and moral complacency. It follows the titular Albion Moonlight on a fevered, apocalyptic journey across a wartime America warped into allegory. Somewhere between a novel and a prose poem, the book fuses mysticism, anti-authoritarian politics, and surrealist experimentation. Critics have compared it to Naked Lunch and Gravity’s Rainbow, though Patchen’s vision is uniquely his own: lyrical, furious, and driven by moral urgency. This edition retains the striking original jacket design and is considered one of the most important early appearances of American literary resistance. Published by The United Book Guild in 1944 — three years after its debut by New Directions — this edition is scarce in dust jacket and often misattributed as a "book club printing" (it is not). For Patchen collectors, this edition represents an important second state — a wartime reprint distributed to maintain the book’s underground momentum. An essential volume for anyone collecting mid-century American dissent. A hallucinatory howl of conscience — Patchen’s Albion Moonlight remains a searing protest against violence and spiritual decay.…

Store description

My name is Jim Camp, and I own and operate the synaesthesia press. First and foremost, the synaesthesia press is a very small, very independent publishing house specializing in broadsides and chapbooks letterpress printed in a small run. Authors and artists past published include Tosh Berman, Tim O’Brien, Barry Gifford, Charles Bukowski, and Charles Plymell, among others. As a bookseller, I offer a variety of inventory -- I especially love stuff that is considered generally subversive; for example, anything by or about Beatniks, Outlaws, Perverts, Weirdos, and Outsiders; good literary fiction (especially "dirty" and / or forgotten titles by forgotten authors) and almost anything by or about Bukowski. I love photography, especially found amateur snapshots and professionally made vintage photographic prints; little mags, zines, photo books, art books and Artists Books; and, finally, anything smutty or sleazy or erotic or cheesecake-related vintage publications, photos or ephemera. Thanks!…
