About this Item
Limited to 300 copies. Cloth, 4to, xvii, 308 pp, 24 plates, 2 engravings. 180 entries. The first edition of Keynes' excellent bibliography of the famous diarist. David McKitterick has written "During the [First World War], and with the aid of A. T. Bartholomew of the University Library, [Geoffrey Keynes] began serious work on the bibliography of John Evelyn basing his work, as usual, on his own collections. An exploratory handlist of Evelyn's work was circulated privately in 1916. The Sandars Readership in 1933-4 provided Keynes with the opportunity to return to his old theme, and he incorporated his two lectures on Evelyn as a bibliophile and book collector into a long introduction to the bibliography. The result was one of the most successful and sympathetic of all his books. Keynes had a sharper eye for the details of book production than many. The plates (both gravure and collotype) were printed by Messrs Emery Walker Ltd; a woodcut of Evelyn by Keynes's sister-in-law Gwen Raverat graced the opening of the preface; and the device on the title-page (after the title-page of Evelyn's own Sculptura (1662)) was engraved by Charles Sigrist. Of the 300 copies printed, 130 were reserved for the Grolier Club of New York." Booklabel of the bibliophile A R A Hobson on front pastedown endpaper and a short note in his hand on the rear free endpaper, boards rubbed and a little marked, short tear to front free endpaper at hinge, otherwise Good.
