Text by Jenny Robertson. Illustrations by Alan Parry.
Scripture Union / Ladybird Books, 1978. First Edition.
ISBN: 0 85421 725 8 (or 0721405630)
A beautiful and scarce larger-format Ladybird Bible Book from the popular 1978 Scripture Union co-publication series. This tall, narrow hardback measures approximately 12.5 cm x 26 cm (uncommon compared to standard Ladybird sizes) and features full-colour illustrations on nearly every page by the talented Alan Parry. The vibrant, expressive artwork brings the early life of Jesus to life in a way that has charmed generations of young readers.
Condition: Very Good
Externally: Clean illustrated boards with light edge rubbing and minor wear consistent with age and gentle use. There is a small bump/nick to the head of the spine (see photos). The spine is tight and square.
Internally: Pages are bright, clean, and free of inscriptions, writing, or major foxing. All illustrations are vivid and intact. Prisitne.
Overall: An attractive, solid copy that presents very well despite the minor spine bump. "Otherwise fine" ? excellent for reading, gifting, or adding to a Ladybird/children?s Bible collection.
Content: This charming retelling covers the birth and childhood of Jesus, from the Annunciation to Mary, the journey to Bethlehem, the Nativity in the stable, the shepherds and wise men, Herod?s threat, the flight to Egypt, and Jesus? early years in Nazareth (including scenes in Joseph?s carpenter shop and at the Temple). Written in clear, engaging language for children, with a strong emphasis on God?s promises and the joy of the Christmas story. Includes the publisher?s series note on the back cover. 28?32 pages.
About the Author: Jenny Robertson is a respected children?s author known for her sensitive and accessible retellings of Biblical stories. She contributed multiple titles to the Ladybird Bible series.
About the Illustrator: Alan Parry provided the rich, atmospheric watercolour-style illustrations for this and other books in the series. His work is noted for its warmth, detail, and emotional depth, making these volumes stand out among 1970s children?s religious books.
This 1978 edition is part of a short-lived but highly collectible larger-format Ladybird Bible series designed to introduce major Old and New Testament stories to children in a visually appealing way. Copies in this condition are increasingly hard to find, especially with the distinctive tall format.
