Jeff Wall has contributed significantly to the establishment of photography as an independent art form since the late 1970s. He is considered the founder of »staged« photography: his motifs initially look like snapshots, but his mostly large-format photographs composed from a multitude of individual shots are predominantly fully constructed image worlds. By combining photography with elements of painting, cinema and literature - a procedure he himself describes as "cinematographic" - he reinstages fictional realities, memories of experienced and seen in an elaborate process.
Among the more than fifty works gathered in the catalogue for the large-scale solo exhibition at the Fondation Beyeler, there are both Wall's iconic large-screen slides in light boxes as well as black-and-white photographs and coloured photo prints. These newer, representing the entire range of his work enter into a dialogue with works from the time of Wall's artistic beginnings and reveal diverse content and formal references.
