[8], [vi], 225-511 pp. Octavo. Text Vol. I only. With bookplate and extensive annotation throughout by F. L. Woodward. In original 3/4 leather binding with black cloth boards. Leather spine covering is missing, corners are rubbed, hinges cracked. Worn but still relatively sturdy. With the then new logo of Mahinda College "Khippam Vayama Pandito Bhava" on the inside front cover, with Woodward's name, a hand-sketched swastika and male symbol. Paper is a bit browned but otherwise unharmed. Woodward's notes and underlinings are extensive, in blue and red ink, throughout. Frank Lee Woodward (1871 1952) was an English educationist, Pali scholar, author and theosophist. Woodward studied and researched on Theravada Buddhism and wrote numerous work based on them. He is admired among the Pali scholars for compiling the vast concordance of Pali canon by translating eighteen of the forty-two volumes of the Pali texts into English. He also served as the principal of Buddhist school Mahinda College, Galle in Ceylon for 16 years from 1903 to 1919. Viggo Fausboll Michael (22 September 1821 3 June 1908) was a Danish educator, translator, orientalist and linguist. He is most noted as a pioneer of Pali scholarship and this is the first edition of one of his most important works. This is the text, or second part, of Vol. I only. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.
