Octavo (21cm); publisher's blue card wrappers illustrated by Eric Coverley; [12],185,[3]pp.; pictorial advertisements bound in front and rear of volume. Moderate wear to wrappers, spine sunned, else Very Good and sound. Substantial collection of poems by the Jamaican author, folklorist, and performer Louise Bennett (1919-2006). "Jamaican dialect is today a living, vivid form of speech, spoken all over the island; on city streets and country roads, witty, humorous and above all, very expressive. This is the language in which I chose to write, and if Jamaican dialect should become a standard language in my lifetime, I should still write in the free expression of the people" (from the author's foreword). This collection one of the author's earliest, published before her marriage in 1954 to Eric Coverley, who provided the lively cover illustration.
