About this Item
Three volumes. Size of the binding: 4 7/8 in. x 8 in. Vol. I: Half-title, title page, advertisement leaf, second half-title. [i]-xxxiii, [1]-298 pp. with imprint at the bottom of page 298; Vol. II: [4], [1]-327 pp., with the imprint at the bottom of p. 327; Vol. III: [4], [1]-371 pp., with the imprint at the bottom of p. 371 + a 3-page publisher's catalogue. Half-titles and second half-titles are present in all volumes. On the title page of Vol. I, the "!" is over the "or" in the name "Prior." The rule measures 10 mm. Vol. I contains a number of mis-numbered pages; e.g., page 159 is mis-numbered "151," and the following pages through to "298" [306]. On p. 296, line 11, the dialogue ending with the word "journey" closes with a single apostrophe instead of the required double. There is no figure on p. 297. On Page [1], the ""P" of the name "ope" in the quotation falls under the "l," not the "ul," of the word "ungrateful." Vol. III, p. 187, line 17 shows the word "frequent" instead of "pregnant." Todd & Bowden: variants for 1st issue (at p. 504): Variant press figures in this copy: Volume 1: p. 44 figure 2 instead of 10, p. 101 lacks figure 2, p. 148 lacks figure 14 but has figure 4 at p. 154, p. 297 lacks figure 3; Volume 2: p. 71 figure 5 instead of 13, p. 244 no figure instead of figure 3. There are repaired tears to page margins: Volume 2: p. 83 top edge, p. 99 fore-edge, Volume 3: p. 349 top edge. Bound in full, dark brown morocco leather by Zaehnsdorf, with their gilt stamp on the lower front inner turn-in, five raised bands on the spine, with gilt titling, double-line borders, and richly gilt inner dentelles, brown watered silk endpapers, top-edge gilt. Fading to the spines and cover margins. The fore and lower edges of the book have not been trimmed in binding. A few pages show some light, scattered tan-spotting. With the bookplate of Cleveland, Ohio based book collector, William G. Mather (1857-1951), on the reverse of the front free endpaper. Weight: 4 lbs. Postage may be extra on this item.
