Peter Thornton’s The Italian Renaissance Interior, 1400-1600 (1991) offers a richly visual and scholarly survey of how interior space was conceived, ornamented, and inhabited in Italy from the Quattrocento through the High Renaissance. Covering everything from ceilings, walls, floors, and fireplaces to furniture, lighting, domestic plumbing, and decorative objects, Thornton examines how patrons, architects, and artisans collaborated to shape interiors that were both functional and symbolic. He places interiors in their social context—considering patronage, maintenance, costs, and the influence of women in domestic spaces—and presents hundreds of period illustrations and color plates to reveal how Renaissance Italians turned living itself into an art.
